Each year on the third Monday of January, we as a nation celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in commemoration of renowned civil rights leader, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Throughout the civil rights movement, Dr. King dedicated his life to the eradication of racism and anti-blackness through nonviolent resistance. From the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott to the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, his unwavering commitment to racial equality was felt globally. His legacy forever ingrained into the history of our nation.
As we honor MLK Jr. Day, let us ensure we’re following in Dr. King’s footsteps in the struggle against racial violence by committing to deliberate action through volunteerism, advocacy and supporting marginalized groups. MLK Day is the only federal holiday to be designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to participate in tangible ways to positively improve their communities.
